“Studentstendtobelievethateveryoneelsegetsonfinewiththeirsupervisorandit’sonlythemwhodoesn’t,”

saysFairweather.“Butmostpeoplehaveadisagreementatsomepoint.”

Ifallelsefails,youmaybeabletoswitchsupervisors.Universitieshavedifferentapproachestohowandwhenyoucandothis.

“Explaintoyourpostgraduatecoordinatorwhyyouthinkit’snotworking,”Fairweatheradds.“They’llknowhowtogoaboutit.”

Ifyouhaveaco-supervisor,theymaybeabletoswaproleswithyourmainsupervisor.

schedulingandtherelationshipsinvolved,saysGillie.

Goodsupervisionisapartnershipandamentorship.“Likeamarriage”,sheadds,itneeds“honestcommunication,

trust,understanding,sharedgoals,andtheabilitytocompromise”.

Ifyou’vedoneallyoucantofixabadsupervisoryrelationship,knowyou’renotaloneanddon’tblameyourself,

saysBaker.SheeventuallycompletedherPhDwiththehelpofhernewsupervisor.
